Know Your Neurons: The Discovery and Naming of the Neuron

Scientific American have just brought out a new “Brainwaves” blog of Neuroscience and Psychology articles. One of the first series of articles is entitled “Know Your Neurons”.  The first chapter (Know Your Neurons: The Discovery and Naming of the Neuron, by Ferris Jaber) tells an interesting tale of the history behind the founding and naming of the neuron, with some early drawings of stained neurons by 19th Century scientists. It is definitely worth a read!

 The following two chapters (see below) outline the dendrology of neurons and how to classify the many different types of neurons, and also take a look at the mysterious Glial cells once believed to have little or no function in the brain.
